Turbo Tax is here!

Boy, am I excited. Seriously. I enjoy doing my taxes the Turbo Tax way. I am sure I am not getting 100% of my allowed refund back (or paying) but I think that 99% is pretty close. People probably get more intimidated by the word "taxes" than anything else. Once you sit down and look at a tax form, then find the proper 1099 or whatever to enter you data from, it is a cinch.

I am already to taxes, and we not entered December yet.

To my loyal readers...

I have seen a lot of other people have links in their sidebar to other blogs. I have started this without asking my Mariner brethren for linking permission. So, before I do this for my loyal readers, I would like to ask you first.

Would you mind if I did a "blog community" sidebar section for my 5 faithful readers? If you do not respond, I will consider that a no. However, just post a quick comment and I would like to add you.

***Montana1, I tried to ask you this question in a comment today, but your word verification was not working. This could have been a Firefox thing more than a Blogger thing.

Almost to winter meetings

The Mariners are now looking at Luis Gonzalez. Why? The guy is 39 years old and has never achieved his near recording breaking home run campaign from 2001. Plus, his average has steadily declined over the years. If they are looking for someone to solve our "corner outfielder" issues, we are not there yet. You might as well bring back Carl Everett...just kidding. Luis has not spent any time in the AL. He could be one of those guys that has an amazing transition year, but I am not putting any money on it. This has a Scott Spiezo-type ring to it; sign him for way more money, then have him spend his time at AAA.

To my devoted Red Sox fan...JD Drew...seriously? It is the off season and the Manny show is full swing and that gets old for us non-Red Sox diehards. He is going to attempt to fill the shoes of a fan favorite Trot Nixon. I also see you have added a reliever in Hideki Okajima. This could help the transition for Daisuke Matsuzaka. (I could be wrong on some of these opinions of mine, but I don't think JD Drew is going to be a good addition to the Red Sox, especially for the rumored 14 Million dollar price tag)

Just for fun, let’s compare the stats of JD Drew and Manny. First JD:

So, even though Manny had 16 less games last year, he had 2 more RBI's and 15 more HR's and 38 points higher in average. This could be in part to Ortiz, but who knows. Manny is all over an RBI like a fat kid on a Twinkie. (I cannot take credit for that one, again ESPN radio)

The Mariners lost yet another bid on a Japanese prospect, Kei Igawa. The Yanks, of all the teams, won the bid.

Turned the game off too soon

Being the loyal Seahawk fan that I am, I promptly turned off the TV once Donald Driver scored early in the 3rd quarter. I turned if off since the defense was not doing much and offense couldn't get in the end zone. Little did I know, the best was yet to come. Shaun was able to top 200 yards in the white mess and Matt did get 3 TD's in the second half. The rare snow storm to the Seattle area was somewhat nice to watch, from my living room. 34 degrees at kickoff is the coldest a start has ever been in Seattle. (Yes, I know they played indoors for a very long time).

Our big snow has not yet hit my house. However, my work area is getting a lot of "lake affect" snow. Too bad my car is in the shop for one more day, I want to see how these new tires handle on the white stuff.

No lights and Hallmark gifts

It might have been the 45+ degree days and sun this weekend that affected my mood in a way that I did not feel like Christmas. So the lights on the house won't be up until next weekend. Logic would say it would have been ideal to place lights on the rain gutters on a non-icy day; instead I will wait until this weekend after a snow storm. We have "winter storm warning" for today, the added snow will make my mood more Christmas. I am also excited to see how my new all-season tires perform on snow.

The Hawks have a chance against the struggling Pack. We will see if Matt can have a triumphant return against his old mates. Well, not sure if there are any "old mates" left besides Fav-ru.

Does anyone actually buy those Hallmark things? If I was stuck in an airport for a 3 hours delay, the last thing I want to hear is songs coming from plastic bears dancing around a plastic tree. And lets be realistic, who in their right mind puts that thing in a carrying on? This ad campaign in my opinion is horrible.

Go Griz....FU BYU

The Griz offense was clicking on all cylinders in yesterdays win over McNeese State. We hope to have a great game against SIU. The Salukis have been impressive this year and should give the Griz a run for their money.

The Utes blew it on the last play. As 0:00 displayed on the clock BYU quarterback John Beck threw a dead duck to a wide open receiver in the end zone. Have I mentioned before how much I cannot stand BYU?

The weekend has been nice in SLC. Today is our day for Christmas lights.

Hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I did avoid going shopping on "Black Friday".

Happy Thanksgiving

I know I am a day early, however I am not sure I will blog tomorrow. Wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

The Mariners appear to be in the Bonds market. I am not sure why we are apparently in this hunt. We are also looking into Igawa, another pitcher from the Far East that played for the Hanshin Tigers. Since they lost out on Daisuke Matsuzaka, we will go after a pitcher that is so far flying in under the radar. As always, I am looking forward to after Thanksgiving when the hot stove really gets going.

Justin Morneau should have won the AL MVP. I heard a lot of people gripe about Jeter. It was my opinion that no matter what, a Twin was going to receive the award this year. My vote earlier in the year was Mauer.

Here is a shocker, the Yankees want Zito. Really? You actually want pitching this year? Here is a good place to find baseball rumors. (And for you football fans).

Added a few things

I have added a few new items to my sidebar:

I plan on changing the clock with the sports seasons. I wish they made free team clocks, that would be cool.

The world map of all IP's that visit my site. As a computer geek, that is pretty neat.

The voting is somewhat lame, I know. However, it would be cool to have more foot traffic so that other yahoos and carbon objects could stumble upon this cyberbrilliance called my blog.

A new joke

I couldn't resist, a different version of the joke told last week. I also emailed this into Sportsbash on ESPN radio for kicks.

A guy walks into a bar in Utah, sorry, a guy walks into a private club in Utah. Once he arrives at the bar, he turns to the guy next to him and asks a question "Do you want to hear a joke about BYU?" The gentleman replies, "Sure!"

I sent this joke because the "Holy War" game is happening this coming Saturday. The sad part is, BYU will probably win...boo hiss.

Yeah Griz...boo Hawks

The Griz beat the Bobcats in somewhat of a nail biter this past weekend. We host McNeese State on Saturday while the bobcats host Furman. I am not sure what to expect from the Griz. Swogger looked a bit off against Bozo, so with McNeese coming to town, I am none too thrilled. I hope to catch some of it this Saturday. The same bar that carried the Griz/Cat game is rumored to be carrying this playoff game.

What are the Seahawks doing? The lose to San Fran, and Shaun was on the field. I knew this could happen. We will truly see next week, not this coming Monday. Shaun and Matt will need a week or two to get back into synch. Apparently, our defense cannot stop the run. I hope we can beat the Packers on Monday night.

Griz/Cat

So, I walked in bar the other night and approached the bar to order a beer. Once I arrived at the bar, I was feeling rather spry. I turned to the person next to me and ask him "Do you want to hear a Montana State joke?" The gentleman turned to me and replied "Before you go on, I am 6'2" and weighs 220 pounds and went to MSU, the guy next me is 6'4" and weighs 240 pounds also went o Montana State. The next guy down is 6"4" and weighs 260 pounds, also a Montana State alumni. Are you sure you want to still tell your joke?" I looked at him and said "Not if I have to tell it 3 times."

(I cannot take credit for this joke. This was a spin on a Michigan/OSU joke I heard on ESPN Radio driving home last night on Sportsbash. If you like ESPN radio, I would recommend this afternoon show; Erik is a good host, in my opinion).

For those regular readers:
Spokane KXLX-AM 700
Minneapolis KFAN AM 1130 or KFXN AM 690
Missoula KGRZ-AM 1290
Waterloo, IA KFMW-FM 107.9
And of course, on ESPNRadio channel on your Satellite radio

I just checked Salt Lake City on the "find you local affiliate search" and it comes up as "not carrying Sportsbash". So the ESPN radio search is meaningless for this. Erik is on from 4-7 PM EST. He occasionally has substitutes, but they are not nearly as good.

UPDATE***

Touche (can't get that thing over the "e") Sir Bill, here is your Portland station...my bad. Yes, you are loyal enough.

BCS..get a playoff already

The sheer fact that myself along with every sport show and radio program is talking about this is only good things for the BCS. The real losers are the teams and fans. The BCS wins no matter what.

Rutgers is undefeated (at the time of this blog). Is it fair for them to play the loser of the Michigan/OSU game? Is it fair for the loser to actually play a Big East team in Rutgers? What about USC, they lost to Oregon State and USC still appears to be on the minds of the BCS. I think USC’s place is based more on historical performance than current. Oh yeah, Boise State beat Oregon State and BSU is undefeated, but who is going to allow a potential #1 come from the WAC. Does Florida have a leg to stand on? Should that Fighting Irish team that I cannot stand have a shot at the national title? All of these are questions that only have 1 answer...16 team playoff.

Factors stopping this from happening: Money. You will hear lame arguments about the students classes/final and such. For that argument, let’s look at D1AA, D2, and D3. D3 does not even hand out athletic scholarships, these are true student athletes. All three divisions seem to do okay with classes and boosters. Let’s keep it real, since when has anyone actually cared about D1 football athletes and graduation rates. Most of them leave after their junior year anyway, jumping at the chance to make a few million at age 21. Plus, you have D1 teams playing like 12 "meaningless" games, essentially. The regular season ends around Thanksgiving, then we wait until January 8th for 2 teams to battle out and determine who #1 is. I am sure if you asked any player the regular season is not meaningless, but it seems odd to get excited over the "Enterprise, we pick-U-up Bowl", unless you are the President of that school and get to watch the money roll in.

We all know money is the only reason that D1 will not have a playoff. It is going to take a major shift in mindset of those BCS supports and school presidents that a playoff is the only way to go.

Bittersweet

NL manager of the year, Joe Girardi, was unemployed minutes after the Marlins regular season ended on October 3rd. WTF is that? He took a team with a 15 million dollar payroll and put them into the wild card hunt. 15 million dollar payroll? Want to see the payroll list?

Wow, 30th in payroll, and 29th was more than double the payroll of the Marlins. Last time I checked, the D-Rays manager had not been fired. I don't understand the manager shuffle that takes place in MLB. Of course, Joe has a job in the Yankee radio booth. Probably pays more than the Marlins job did anyway.
